Cabos San Lucas, Mexico
By Natalie Schwartz
September 2005
Nestled between the dramatic Pacific Ocean and the beautiful Sea of Cortez in a region known as Los Cabos, (The Capes), you will find the beautiful and unique towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. In the 16th and 17th centuries, notorious pirates concealed themselves in the bays and coves along the coastline in order to ambush passing Spanish galleons. Long gone are the pirates and the quiet fishing villages as this is now a thriving resort area.

Cabo San Lucas, once a sleepy fishing village and
private hideaway for the rich and famous, has become a world renown resort area. Whether you are looking for a quiet, relaxing romantic encounter or a perfect spot for the entire family, Cabo San Lucas is the place to be with hotels that meet everyone’s needs and budget.
Charming is the word most often used to describe San Jose del Cabo, which was founded as a mission in 1730. This sleepy town is the county seat of Los Cabos and although the city bustles with daily business and government, it instills a sense of old Mexican charm. Shops located around the historical plaza offer a great place to sit and relax or stop at one of the many sidewalk cafes for a snack or a nice leisurely lunch.

The residents of Los Cabos enjoy a comfortable and healthy life-style. Work is plentiful with zero unemployment factor resulting in a high quality life-style with very little crime.
Los Cabos has it all, including golf, water sports, boating, fishing, horseback riding, restaurants, great nightlife where you can easily dance till dawn and, of course, shopping with an abundance of all types of Mexican handicrafts, silver, pewter, ceramics, wood carvings, pure vanilla and Cuban cigars.

There are five major championship golf courses completed with more on the way making Los Cabos the golf capital of Mexico. Most swimming is at gorgeous infinity pools at the various hotels as most beaches are not safe most of the year due to a very strong under toe. There are many quiet beaches and coves located along the corridor that connects Cabo San Lucas to San Jose del Cabo. Water sports available in the area include scuba diving, surfing, para-sailing, snorkeling, sea kayaking, water skiing, glass bottom cruises, wave runners, wind surfing and whale watching.
At the southern most tip of the Baja Peninsula is Land’s End where the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of
Cortez meet. A boat trip will take you past the most dramatic setting in Los Cabos which is El Arco, a rock arch that has been carved by the waves. If a boat trip is not for you, one of the best sunset views of El Arco can be seen from one of the tables along a cliff at the Da Giorgio II restaurant just north of Cabo San Lucas.
